For delivery apps in the UAE, it’s a race to the bottom
The food delivery scene in Dubai is in many ways reminiscent of food delivery markets across the globe: platform companies backed by finance capital that aim towards achieving near-monopoly status at any cost. The conditions, commissions and other fees that platforms impose on restaurants lead to a situation where platforms reap all the spoils of the burgeoning food delivery business during the pandemic, leaving restaurants struggling to survive.
