Spain's gig economy poses labour rights conundrum as regulation eyed

Building on the Supreme Court ruling in September that deemed that Glovo couriers were employees and not freelancers, Spain is currently pursuing legal intervention that would mandate platform companies to put service sector workers on staff contracts, giving them access to worker protections. If the legislation passes, platform companies will likely resort to workarounds such as recruiting workers via temporary job agencies, thereby avoiding the responsibilities and costs that come with giving workers employee status.
